IP transit vs dedicated internet: which do you need?


The short answer
IP transit carries a network's traffic to the global internet and is sold by capacity to ISPs and operators that run their own routing. Dedicated internet delivers a fixed, uncontended connection to a single organization that just wants reliable access. If you announce your own IP addresses, you need transit; if you don't, you need dedicated internet.
Do you run your own network on the internet, with your own IP address space and routers that speak BGP? If yes, you are a transit customer. If no, you are a dedicated internet customer. Everything else follows from that answer.
Transit is the wholesale product. An ISP, mobile operator or large enterprise with its own address space connects to a gateway and exchanges routes with it. The gateway carries the customer's traffic to everywhere on the internet and accepts traffic back. Capacity is committed and typically upgraded in steps as subscribers grow.
Dedicated internet is the retail product for organizations: a fixed connection for one office, campus or factory that is not shared with other customers at peak hour. The provider handles the routing; the customer plugs in.
