The 3-2-1 rule: keep three copies of your data, on two different types of storage, with one copy off-site. Backup-as-a-Service provides the off-site copy without a second building: your data is backed up on a schedule to a data centre in Bangladesh and can be restored when the original is lost, corrupted or encrypted by ransomware.
A modern addition is one immutable copy: a backup that cannot be altered or deleted for a set period, so ransomware that reaches your network cannot encrypt the backup as well.
Not because they disagree, but because the off-site copy used to mean a second location, someone carrying drives, or a foreign cloud subscription paid in dollars on a personal card.
